What caused Miley Cyrus to have wrist surgery?

Miley Cyrus was in the hospital last week (as her photos on Instagram kept everyone informed), but the actress/singer didn’t divulge too much about her condition other than it was a routine surgery on her wrist for a ganglion cyst. SEE ALSO: Healing three common injuries: tendonitis, pulled muscles and sprains The procedure was performed in the hospital but as an out-patient appointment, meaning Miley was back in the comfort of her own home the same day as she was admitted, and fans were able to keep up with the process through graphic photos shared on social media. “I have pizza in my veins,” Miley wrote as a caption for one picture showing the inside of her wrist. The lumps are vary in size and are filled with a gel-like substance. Most ganglion cysts will go away on their own; however, if they are very painful or are limiting joint function, surgical removal is often necessary. “A ganglion rises out of a joint, like a balloon on a stalk. It grows out of the tissues surrounding a joint, such as ligaments, tendon sheaths, and joint linings. Inside the balloon is a thick, slippery fluid, similar to the fluid that lubricates your joints,” states the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. “Ganglion cysts can develop in several of the joints in the hand and wrist, including both the top and underside of the wrist, as well as the end joint of a finger, and at the base of a finger. They vary in size, and in many cases, grow larger with increased wrist activity. With rest, the lump typically becomes smaller.” The exact cause of ganglion cysts are unknown, though repeated stress to the joint area appears to be a common factor. Women are more likely to have ganglion cysts compared to men, and the lumps are most often found in people between the ages of 15 and 40. Surgical intervention for ganglion cysts is considered the best option to prevent recurrence. During surgery, doctors remove the cyst as well as part of the involved joint capsule or tendon sheath. Even with this complete removal, there is a small chance the cyst will return. At this time it is not known if Miley Cyrus had surgery because the ganglion cyst was causing her pain or if she had issues with its appearance.
