Mun2 becomes NBC Universo on Super Bowl Sunday

Telemuno’s secondary network mun2 is no more starting next month, making way for a relaunch into NBC Universo.

NBC Universo will launch February 1st  with a simulcast in Spanish of the Super Bowl XLIX.

The launch aims to “showcase top sports action from around the world, as well as high-quality entertainment, music, series and storytelling that is emotional and edgy, and connects with U.S. Hispanics.”

Mun2 launched back in 2001 when Telemundo purchased it and revamped the programming to target younger viewers.

“Our prominent new name and logo reflect to the world that we are NBCUniversal’s modern general entertainment cable channel for Latinos,” said Rubén Mendiola, President, mun2. “We will super-serve this community with a universe of exciting viewing options in ways that are compelling and culturally relevant for Latinos. Through this strategy, we are building a high-quality cable TV channel that we believe distributors are ready to embrace, advertisers are ready to support, and viewers will be drawn to.”

Mun2 had already been slowly starting the transition to its new brand since Fall 2014 when it introduced new entertainment and sports options.

Back in September, it launched the first of 100 matches it will air of the 14-15 season of the Barclays Premier League, along with the first of five NFL games to air on the network this season.

But plans go much further than just these two sport spectacles.

In addition to the NFL and BPL, NBC Universo is planning on expanding its sports programming lineup even further with some much international-level sports.

Partnering with NBC Sports Group and Telemundo, NBC UNIVERSO will cover:

• Men’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, hosted by New Zealand from May 30 to June 20;
• FIFA Women’s World Cup™ played in Canada from June 6 to July 5;
• Men’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup hosted by Portugal from July 9 to July 19;
• and FIFA U-17 World Cup played in Chile from October 17 to November 8.

NBC UNIVERSO also will exclusively showcase in Spanish:

• The Rio 2016 Olympic Games,
• The NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series
• and WWE programming hits WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown

As for entertainment the new network is going to build on the popularity of A Today Gloria – a series that gives a look into the life of Latin music icon Gloria Trevi — as well as Larrymania and Fugitivos de la Ley.
