You’d think that because of their trajectories, salsa singer Ruben Blades or reggae king El General, would be the Panamanian stars with the most following on social media. Well, think again.
A conversation that took place Thursday morning on CNN en Español asked Twitter users if they knew which Panama-based artist had the most Facebook followers.
In their list were Josenid, Eddy Lover, Makano and Blades. To everyone’s surprise, urban star Makano took the lead.
The singer, who is known for his 2009 international hits “Te Amo” and “Dejame Entrar,” has surpassed the grand Blades in this friendly Facebook battle with over 4 million followers.
This came as a shocker, considering that Blades, 66, has had a longer running career than Makano.
Not to mention, that his discography goes as far as 1968 and he’s a multiple Latin GRAMMY and GRAMMY-winning star.
Makano, on the other hand, has been making the rounds since early 2000s and yet nabs the Facebook throne –perhaps this has to do with the fact that a new generation is all about the Internet.
“I feel honored to see how far my fans, friends and followers have taken me. They’ve been with me every step of my career,” he posted in Spanish on his social media platforms. “To see my name on that CNN survey makes me happy,” he added. “To know that I’m the Panamanian artist with the most friends on Facebook has me impressed.”
Makano takes the crown for beating out colleagues Josenid, Eddy Lover and Ruben Blades, who all have a little over 1 million followers.
But because no one will go home a loser (and to be fair), Blades beats out Makano with a larger following on Twitter. Ruben has 633K; whereas, Makano has 113K.
