Rap star Iggy Azalea quit social media this week after unkind comments regarding images of her in a bikini. The celebrity, known for her curves, commented on how ridiculous it was for people to be critical of her cellulite.

“Just got back from a great vacation, came online and saw apparently it’s shocking and unheard of to be a woman and have cellulite. Lol,” she wrote on Twitter.

“I feel that the hatred and pettiness I see online at all times is making me become an angry person and I cannot be that,” she continued. “To become nasty because of the way I feel and I’m treated would be a disservice to my fans and I promise I’ll try to keep smiling.”

Though people are quick to point out the flaws in celebrities’ bodies, the fact of the matter is photos we see of most models and famous women are retouched–some heavily. The reason the public isn’t used to seeing cellulite on women is because it is carefully airbrushed away during editing.

Are some women really cellulite-free? Sure, but 90 percent of women experience cellulite at some point in their lives–even if they are in shape and slender.

Health.com indicates women suffer from cellulite, particularly around the butt and thighs, because they have less connective tissue in those areas compared to men, and cellulite forms when fat pushes through weak connective tissue toward the skin. Only 10 percent of men experience cellulite, compared to almost all women.

Cellulite also gets worse as people age and can be influenced by everything from diet to genetics.

Shira Ein-Dor, owner of the American Cellulite Reduction Center in New York City, told ABC News it doesn’t matter how heavy a woman is; anyone can have cellulite. Being overweight makes it more apparent, but won’t cause more.

“I even treat Victoria’s Secret models,” she said. “They’re very lean, they work out and eat well, they do everything right but they still have cellulite.”

While cellulite can’t magically vanish, how it looks can be improved with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. Exercise keeps muscles and other connective tissues strong, which keeps fat pockets in their rightful position.

As for Iggy Azalea, she is well within her rights to fire back at critics who are holding her to physically impossible standards through a paparazzi photo.

“But I also want to let my fans know I’m taking some time away from social media,” she said in conclusion, stating she felt the Internet was the ugliest reflection of mankind.

“I need to be happy and it is too negative and draining. My management will tweet/run my accounts from today onwards with updates etc unless any message is signed -IA. Love you all. Peace out!”
