Having the opportunity to interview some of Latin music’s biggest stars is always fun, moreover if it’s someone that I’ve been listening to since I was a quinceañera. That was the case this week when I was shoulder-to-shoulder with no other than Daddy Yankee in South Florida, yo!
I encountered DY at a high school in Pembroke Pines, Fla. where he was recording the music video for his single “Sigueme y te Sigo” (Follow me and I’ll follow back).

Though the official video is in the making, the Puerto Rican artist was celebrating the record’s debut on iTunes and its lyric video, which dropped Thursday this week.
“Oh my God, it’s a summer anthem, with the rhythm? you know Daddy Yankee songs, with a lot of fire,” he said to VOXXI of his fresh and vibrant song while taking a break from a long and hectic afternoon of filming.
“The name of the song is ‘Sigueme y te Sigo,’ and you know, social media is all about having fun. That popular phrase is where I got my inspiration from,” he said. “I wanted to connect my vibe with the new generation coming up.”
Which explains why he’s filming the music video at a high school.
In an interview that was literally only two minutes and 18 seconds (but felt like a lifetime –in a good way), El Cangri also spoke of his new venture as judge in Telemundo’s “La Voz Kids.”
“Being a judge is new in my career. That’s the main reason I decided to be a part of ‘La Voz Kids,’” he said. “But also, learning a lot from the new talents –they connect me with the root of music, which is all about having fun.”
But what exactly will it take for these aspiring children to nab a spot on #TeamYankee during the show’s third season? “You have to have the voice and also the charisma to grab people’s attention,” he added.

Not only was interviewing Daddy Yankee a first in my book, but so was catching a behind-the-scenes look at his upcoming music video.
“Sigueme y te Sigo,” which forms part of his album “King Daddy II,” is already available on iTunes; the video is yet to premiere; and “La Voz Kids” airs Sunday, March 15th.
