“Who gave this son of a b**ch his green card?” an insensitive and inappropriate Sean Penn asked as he announced the Academy Award for Best Picture to Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu for his film “Birdman.”

Was it friendly banter between two greats with respect for each other in the film business or a downright racist introduction?

The fact of the matter is the Mexican director made history by being the second Mexican film director winning the category of best director in the Academy Awards for the second consecutive year. Last year fellow countryman Alfonso Cuaron won best directing for his science fiction oddyssey “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock. However, the icing on the cake in this year’s Oscars is that Iñarritu’s film also won Best Motion Picture ? a feat “Gravity” couldn’t pull off last year.

“I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans, I pray that we can find and build the government that we deserve. And to the ones that live in this country, I just pray they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones that came before and built this incredible, immigrant nation,” Iñarritu said as he held his golden statue up high.

Humbled with the academy, his team and producers, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu’s film also won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Achievement in Cinematography to Emmanuel Lubezki.

But prior to “Birdman’s” exceptional night with four out of nine deserving wins, the 87th annual Academy Awards took by storm Hollywood, Calif. when the stars arrived at the red carpet flaunting their best suits and gowns.

Strutting and posing for the cameras were five of our favorite Latinas: Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o, Zoe Saldaña, America Ferrera and Gina Rodriguez.

Lopez looked like a flawless princess in a cleavage-baring Elie Saab gown with a long train. Whereas, Oscar-winning Nyong’o kept it simple an elegant wearing a pearled, halter top Calvin Klein Collection’s Francisco Costa piece.

But the star that turned heads because of her exceptional figure after recently giving birth to twins is Caribbean starlet Zoe Saldaña, who showed off her curvaceous and fit body in a blush, skin-tight Versace piece.

After a nearly two-hour red carpet showcase, the big night in film began, under the reign of first-time Oscar host Neil Patrick Harris.

Some of his most remarkable moments as a host included his phrase, “Today, we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest…. sorry, brightest,” mocking the controversial hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

The comedian and actor also caught everyone’s attention when he walked on stage in nothing but a pair of tighty-whities in a “Birdman” spoof.

In the midst of many jokes and entertaining the crowd, we dare to say that Harris was unable to top Ellen Degeneres’ hosting at the Oscars last year. Yes, we still can’t get over the selfie that broke the Internet with stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Bradley Cooper.

But enough with Neil, and on to some of the big wins of the night.

Lupita Nyong’o, who won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2014, presented the first award of the night to J.K Simmons who won for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Whiplash.” The film also managed to nab the Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Achievement in Film Editing.

Shortly after, Adam Levine and Maroon 5 took the stage, hyping up the audience.

Puerto Rican actress, J.Lo, later presented the Oscar for Achievement in Costume Design to Milena Canonero for “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” The movie also took home the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. In addition to Best Production Design and Original Score.

“American Sniper” garnered Best Sound Editing, “Interstellar” got Best Visual Effects and Zoe Saldaña along with The Rock, presented Best Animated Featured Film to “Big Hero 6.”

One of the best speeches of the night was delivered by Best Actress in a Supporting Role Patricia Arquette, who took the Oscar for her role in “Boyhood.”

“To every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America,” Arquette said, garnering an epic reaction from Meryl Streep.

As the show continued, we couldn’t help but notice that the nine-time nominated film “Birdman” was not winning any Oscar, until the Achievement in Cinematography was handed to Mexican talent Emmanuel Lubezki for his work in the film.

Lubezki, who first won an Oscar for “Gravity,” shared his golden statue with Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñarritu, for being an extraordinary director and friend.

Towards the end, “Birdman” managed to become a big win of the night, sweeping four Oscars in total. Iñarritu is the second Mexican to receive Best Director following Alfonso Cuaron’s 2014 win for “Gravity.”

Best Actor in a Leading Role went to Eddie Redmayne in “The Theory of Everything” and Best Actress in a Leading Role went to Julianne Moore in “Still Alice.”

Aside the big wins, the best highlights included Lady Gaga as she paid an impeccable musical tribute to Julie Andrews and the “Sound of Music,” and when Idina Menzel shared stage with John Travolta to present Best Original Song to Selma’s “Glory.”

Menzel and Travolta made fun of last year’s incident when Travolta butchered Menzel’s name calling her Adele Dazeem. This time, Menzel seeked revenge by introducing Travolta as Glom Gazingo.
