AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania Recognized Three Years in a Row by NCQA for Multicultural Health Care Excellence

Local Insurer is One of Only Eight Medicaid Plans Nationwide to Be So
Honored

HARRISBURG, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania, a Medical Assistance (Medicaid)
managed care plan serving Central and Northwestern Pennsylvania and part
of the AmeriHealth Caritas family of companies, announced today that it
has received the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA’s)
Multicultural Health Care Distinction for the third time. AmeriHealth
Caritas Pennsylvania is one of only eight Medicaid plans nationwide to
hold this distinction.

NCQA bestowed the distinction upon the health plan for its delivery of
culturally appropriate care and quality improvement interventions in
serving diverse populations. For example:

  • AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania associates use more than 40 different
languages to communicate with their members.
  • The health plan also offers health education programs on prenatal care
and other topics tailored to the unique needs of the ethnic groups in
    its membership.

AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania was recognized by NCQA as an early
adopter of the Multicultural Health Care Distinction in 2010. The next
year, it became one of the first seven health plans in America to
formally receive this accolade. In 2013, its distinction was renewed for
another two years.

“We are committed to helping every member receive quality care,” said
Marge Angello, market president of AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania.
“It’s a privilege to be recognized for our commitment to personally
engaging and empowering the diverse populations we serve to ensure they
stay well.”

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health
care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care
organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas
of performance. NCQA is committed to providing health care quality
information for consumers, purchasers, health care providers and
researchers.

The Multicultural Health Care program evaluates how well an organization
complies with standards for the following areas:

  • Collection of race/ethnicity and language data.
  • Provision of language assistance.
  • Cultural responsiveness.
  • Quality improvement of culturally and linguistically appropriate
    services.
  • Reduction of health care disparities.

NCQA awards distinction to organizations that meet or exceed its
rigorous requirements for multicultural health care.

“Earning Multicultural Health Care Distinction shows that an
organization is making a breakthrough in providing excellent health care
to diverse populations. I congratulate any organization that achieves
this level of distinction,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane.
“Eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care is essential
to improving the quality of care overall.”
