Ricky Martin has long allied himself as an activist for children, fighting against child sex trafficking and other causes, as well as having two boys of his own, but now he’s stepping up his activism in his native Puerto Rico, asking its legislature to allow gay parents to adopt in the island.

Tuesday the singer called on government officials to immediately approve the law authorizing same-sex couples on the island to adopt children, as reported by news wire agency EFE.

“I regret the decision in Puerto Rico about (equal marriage), but I know that we will win the appeal. All the rights for all the love,” the artist posted on Twitter.

Martin is openly gay after coming out of the closet several years ago and is the father of twin boys Matteo and Valentino—he has expressed he wants to adopt a sister for his twin sons back in September.

The reason for Martin’s comments is that federal Judge Juan Perez Gimenez rejected a lawsuit on the island filed by several gay couples that wanted their same-sex marriages to be recognized on the island.

“In the judge’s opinion, Puerto Rican policy on same-sex marriage should not be decided by judges, but rather by the U.S. commonwealth’s legislative branch after debate among the citizenry and their elected representatives,” EFE reported.
