Police officers on edge after Los Angeles police officers are shot at
Amidst a wave of antipolice sentiment that has swept many large cities in the country and two Los Angeles Police officers shot at this weekend as they patrolled the southern part of the California city, many police officers have reported being on edge. Unlike the two New York Police Department officers who were killed in an ambush shooting earlier this month, the two officers from the Los Angeles Police Department didnt suffer injuries in Sunday night’s shooting. CNN reports that one shooting suspect was arrested and two weapons were recovered, including a rifle. The officers involved were driving in response to a call at about 9:20 p.m. Pacific time when they saw the visible blast of a weapon, determining someone was firing at them. Detective Megan Aguilar with LAPD told CNN that investigators have nothing to indicate that theres a nexus between the shooting and recent nationwide protests against police brutality that have fueled animosity toward police. The manhunt involving about 100 police officers–that netted one of the suspects in this shooting–was called off Monday morning; another suspect remains on the loose, according to the most recent police report. Detectives have not indicated what the motive of the shooting might have been. Nonetheless, the escalating anti-cop sentiment going around the country is of concern for LAPD officials. “We don’t know what precipitated the shooting,” LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman told the Los Angeles Times, but “everyone’s keenly aware of what happened in New York,” and there is a “sense of uneasiness.” The Los Angeles Police shooting comes in the wake of another similar shooting in Florida earlier on Sunday. In this incident someone reportedly fired three bullets at two deputies with the Pasco County Sheriffs Office. This weekend 25,000 officers from across North America were present at the funeral service for New York Police Department officer Angel Ramos, 40, who was gunned down along with his partner Wenijan Liu on the 20th of December.
