Alejandro Iñarritu’s ‘Birdman’ gets SAG Award for Best Cast

The cast of “Birdman” gave thanks Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu’s genius for creating the film that won them the Best Cast in a Motion Picture award at the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night. SEE ALSO: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar might come thanks to Alejandro Iñarritu Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts and Edward Norton were part of the last ensemble of stars to take the stage and receive the biggest award in this ceremony dedicated strictly to recognize performers of the big and small screen. Iñarritu, of Mexican descent, directed “Birdman” also know by its other title, “The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance.” It’s a story of an actor (Keaton), who is known for playing the role of an iconic superhero and the challenges he faces while trying to mount a Broadway show — one of the biggest challenges in this black comedy is his ego. “Alejandro, you’re a genius,” said Amy Ryan as she took to the microphone on stage. Keaton also had words of praise for Alejandro Iñarritu upon accepting the award: “This is for Alejandro, and the producers and all of you…. “Actors love this movie for showing the courage actors have to kind of go out there and lay it on the line.” It was clear they were happy to receive the award, but were it not Iñarritu’s vision, the project wouldn’t have been such a success. SEE ALSO: The brouhaha over the lack of diversity at the Oscars The movie was up against,  “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” for the category. ‘OITNB’ shows more Latino star power at the SAG Awards It’s true that they did save the best award for last, but that’s not to say that the other categories of the night weren’t important. You see, unlike the Oscars, you won’t be seeing a category such as best film at the SAG Awards. Instead,  the focus is on the actors, and that’s where the stars of comedy “Orange is the New Black,” were able to shine, lending more Latino star power to the show in the realm of TV programs.
