Five TED Talks brought to you by Hispanics
TED Talks have become quite popular in the last few years. Local communities have set up TEDx events — events that are local chapters of TED and bring out the best ideas from the locals. And NPR has even partnered with TED for the TED Radio Hour where speakers are interviewed further. TED Talks are described as ideas worth spreading and sharing and can be on any subject you could possibly think of. If it’s an idea that you think is worth sharing, then TED is the place. Here are some of the TED Talks — both by national TED and local TEDx — featuring some Hispanics talking anything. The topics are a varied as you could imagine. Teddy Cruz on “How architectural innovations migrate across borders” In this talk talk, architect Teddy Cruz talks about urban development. He shares lessons from the slums of Tijuana and explores the creative intelligence of the city’s residents In doing so he offers a fresh perspective on how we can learn from places of scarcity. Gabe Barcia-Colombo on “the ethical issues that will arise as access to biotechnology increases” Gabe Barcia-Colombo dreamt up a DNA Vending Machine, which dispenses extracted human DNA, packaged in a vial along with a collectible photo of the person who gave it. But don’t get your spare change ready, because the idea, though charming, points out larger ethical issues on the rising access to biotechnology. Isabel Allende on “How to live passionatelyno matter your age” In this talk, Isabel Allende talks about her fears as she gets older — but shares how she plans to keep on living passionately. Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez on “found Back to the Roots” Inspired by the idea of turning waste into fresh, local food, Arora and Velez experimented in a fraternity kitchen, ultimately growing one test bucket of oyster mushrooms. With that one bucket they decided to forgo their investment banking and consulting offers. Instead they became full-time urban mushroom farmers. Jose Antonio Vargas on “the campaign that seeks to elevate the conversation around immigration” Jose Antonio Vargas, an award-winning multimedia storyteller, is the founder of Define American, a campaign that seeks to elevate the conversation around immigration. Vargas stunned the media when he wrote the groundbreaking essay, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant,” for the New York Times Magazine in the summer of 2011.
