We Must Knock Out Synthetic Marijuana

Since last January, New York City emergency rooms have received more than 4,500 patients due to the damage caused by synthetic drugs. Only between July and August 2,300 patients were attended, 90% of them were men with a median age of 37.

Sales of these types of drugs have skyrocketed in Latino neighborhoods, thanks to being easily accessible in local shops like bodegas.

That’s why it is very important to urgently approve effective measures to control this new plague that is poisoning the streets and its people.

It is true that the authorities have dealt several crucial blows to distributors since the increase in synthetic marijuana use was detected.

A gang that operated near a school was busted recently. This week, the Police seized 2 million packets worth $10 million in a Bronx garage.

Also, a task force has been created to prevent against drug use from several fronts.

However, several regulations to curtail the sale of K2 are still pending of approval in the City Council. One of the proposals seeks to classify the manufacture, distribution and sales of synthetic marijuana as a criminal offense with penalties of up to $5,000 and one-year prison sentences.

We also support a measure seeking the revocation of tobacco sales license of any business that sells K2.

As business owners must cooperate, we welcome the campaign of 1,700 bodegas which, under the motto “K.O. K2,” vow not to let the drug dealers persuade them.

We cannot let this situation spin out of control. We must tackle the problem at its source.
